Prosthetics: Sculpting

Sculpting lets you deliver much more detail in your work.  It takes time and a lot of patience.  There are numerous sculpting tools that are available.  You can also use a trick to smooth and blend out the clay by using 99% isopropyl alcohol.  Sculpting is a crucial part when making prosthetics, so you can give your pieces more depth.

Once you mold your clay either onto a lifecast or free hand, you'll want to give it details.  You do this by using tools to sculpt it.  Giving your prostehic depth will make it that much more realistic.

You can buy sculpting tools any a hobby shop.  They typically come in sets.  However, if you're on a budget you can use items from around the house like a popsicle stick, the end of make up brushes, even a butter knife.

Alcohol slightly dissolves the clay.  If you use just a little bit it helps you manipulate the clay which can help you smooth it.  You'll also want to add a little to the edges to help blend it out.  If you're working the clay for long periods of time you may want to have a small bowl of water nearby to dip your fingers in to prevent the clay from sticking to your hands.

Sculpting times a long time to get the hang of.  Have tools handy to help you design your clay.  You'll also want to have some 99% isoproyl alcohol handy to smooth out edges.  Just be sure to take your time!
